The peaks of impasto that are characteristic of this artists thickly applied paint had been “squashed” as the painting had been packed incorrectly. It is interesting that the artists paint was still soft more than 50 years later. This would be due to the poor quality of oil and lack of driers in the mixture.
The treatment involved raising the squashed peaks and re-creating the sharp brushstrokes in the damaged areas.
