Described by the renowned scholar Professor Christopher Brown as ‘one of the finest head studies from this moment in Van Dyck’s career’, this energetic head sketch in oils, painted c.1618-20, is a preparatory study for the torch-bearing figure in the background of The Betrayal of Christ (in the Minneapolis Institute of Art), one of the artist’s most important early compositions.
